Assisi is permeated with the memory of Saint Francis and Giotto; both changed the way of conceiving faith and painting. This tour will lead you into a mystic dimension.
Situated in Umbria, a region between Rome and Florence, it acts as a magnet for tourists, not only for the spectacular Basilica, but also for the beauty of the hills, its art and good living.
Your guide will wait for you at Santa Maria degli Angeli, where Francis prayed and died ( the Porziuncola). The Porziuncola is a 9th century little church enclosed in a Papal Basilica, is the most sacred place for the Fransiscans.
This stop is very important to understand Francis’s life.
You will enjoy strolling around the narrow streets of the ancient town, to reach the Church of Santa Chiara. Its Byzantine Crucifix revealed to the Saint his mission. In this Basilica, pilgrims can venerate the mortal remains of St. Clare, and pray silently in front of the Crucifix, using the Saint’s words.
On the way to Piazza del Comune (Town Hall Square) you will pass the Oratorio, the birthplace of St. Francis, with the remarkable Augustan Temple of Minerva.
The main highlight is the Basilica of Saint Francis, goal of countless pilgrimages, whose Crypt contains the tomb of the Saint. The dark vaulted Lower Church has been frescoed by artists from all over Italy such as Giotto, Cimabue and Simone Martini. The walls of the upper Church are decorated mostly by Giotto with the Scenes of the Old and the New Testament. It is a real mystic place also for not-Christians, immersed in a spectacular environment.
